I strongly agree with Sarah that social media has caused more harm than good.
As the professor says, the spread of misinformation, the rise of cyberbullying, and addiction to social media use are relatively prevalent phenomenon.
For example, the Chinese netizens have abused a young girl who dyed her hair with pink color. The result is that the girl has committed suicide. Cases like this make it crucial for the government to implement relevant laws as to the courtesy of using cyber language.
Moreover, the spreading of rumors and addiction are also detrimental to people’s mental health. People tend to say whatever they like on the internet due to deindividuation and anonymity.
For example, I have a sister who spends approximately 8 hours on the internet each day. As a result, she can never find a decent job or go to the school of her dream. She is more isolated than ever because of her rude internet languages has unconsciously influenced her daily life. This is a quintessential example of how the internet ruins a person’s daily functioning.
Mark raises the relevant point that the internet is a platform for political activism.
However, these are just mere visions instead of reality. At least to the present stage, I would say that the disadvantages of social media have outweighed its merits.
